Vacations Abroad
Most families vacation on road trips to a nearby state, or fly to the other side of America, but some families take vacations to a whole different country. Whether that is to visit family outside the country or it’s an item they get to check off their bucket list, every family has their own way of vacationing.
Holly Miller, science teacher at Mead Public Schools, took a trip to Hawaii and Australia for four weeks to check it off her husband’s bucket list. Miller and her husband, Nick Miller, started their trip with three weeks in Australia.
“We went to Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, and some national parks in Tasmania,” Miller said.
A highlight of the trip for Miller was a guided mammal tour at night. Within that tour, she was able to see many animals that are native to Australia and would have been hard to see on her own. She saw many different types of possums, Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroos, leaf tailed geckos, and many more.
“We had a guide who took us out after dark to a couple of sites,” Miller said. “He had red light-flashlights and a thermal scope, and we'd walk quietly behind him as he searched for animals. Then he'd point them (the animals) out to us and show us.”
After Australia, the Millers headed to Hawaii for one week, where they were able to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, snorkel with manta rays, and hike at many national parks.
“We also had a lot of rain in Hawaii, which kept us from doing more hiking,” Miller said. “It was also hard to be out in the heat after being cold a lot of the time we were in Australia.”
While Miller took a trip as a bucket list item, junior Jade Grasiani took a trip to Heftziba Israel to visit her family.
“My family usually goes to Israel about every four years just to visit family, and tour the area,” Grasiani said.
Grasiani and her dad Mantan Grasiani visited Isreal for two and a half weeks. Mantan Grasiani was born and raised in Israel and his whole family still lives there.
“I was definitely most looking forward to seeing my family,” Jade Grasiani said. “I just love my family.”
Grasiani devoted most of her time in Isreal at her grandparents’ house spending time with her family. When she wasn’t at her grandparents' house, she was swimming in canals with her cousins, visiting old friends and eating good food.
“Probably the biggest highlight of the trip was just getting to see my grandma,” Grasiani said. “As well as the night we got there (to Israel). There was a big holiday being celebrated and all my family in town came down to my grandma’s house.”
