Extra Curricular Activities

Mead Public Schools offers the following extra-curricular activities, athletics and clubs for our students to enjoy.

Academic Decathlon

Coach:  Brandi Zetocka

Academic Decathlon is designed to prepare students for regional and state competitions in ten separate events (7 objective tests, Speech, Interview, and Essay) covering seven academic subjects (Art, Economics, Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, and Social Sciences)

Band

Band Director:  Cindy Miller

The Mead Raider band includes an elementary concert band, jr. high concert band, high school concert band, pep band and marching band. Students start their band career in the 5th grade.

Baseball

The Ashland-Greenwood/Mead/Yutan baseball team (Platte Valley Patriots) is a co-op between schools to allow our male students an opportunity to play baseball at the high school level.

Boys Basketball

The Mead Raiders basketball team comprises of 2 teams, Junior Varsity and Varsity

A Jr. High boys basketball team is also offered, coached by Eric Johnson.

Chorus

Choir Director:  Cindy Miller

The Mead Raider Choir includes a 7th and 8th grade performance group and a 7th and 8th grade music appreciation class and a 7-12 grade mixed ensemble. These ensembles perform for home concerts, Malcolm Music Contest, ECNC honor choir, District Music Contest, National Anthem for sporting events, and other honor festivals.

Cross Country

Mead co-ops Cross Country with Yutan to give our male and female high school athletes another option for a sport during the Fall.

Drama (One-Act)

Co-Directors:  Amanda Lee and Alexis Pedersen

One-Act is a theatrical performance of 20-30 minutes where students in grades 9-12 compete based on skills of voice, characterization, ensemble, timing, and effectiveness. This also includes staging done by student crew members who create the sets, lighting, sounds, and props.

FCCLA

Sponsor:  Megan Dworak

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America is a student organization that has the family at its focus.  FCCLA is a national Career and Technical Education Organization that addresses the importance of work, societal, and personal issues that may affect a family or community.  This organization supports the Family and Consumer Science classes at Mead High School.

FFA

Sponsor:  Cole Blomendahl

FFA provides the next generation of leaders who will change the world. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

Golf

Mead co-ops with Cedar Bluffs for Girls Golf (Fall) and Boys Golf (Spring) to give our students another option for competition.

Journalism

Adviser:  Rod Henkel

Journalism is an activity where students prepare the yearbook covering the school year and enhance their skills in writing, design, photography and broadcasting.  Any work created throughout the school year can qualify to be entered into the Nebraska School Activities Association's state journalism contest.  Students can participate either by enrolling in journalism class or by working with the adviser outside of class on projects.

National Honor Society

Sponsor:  Dawn Moser

National Honor Society membership is by application after three semesters of study in high school.  The four cardinal areas include scholarship, leadership, character, and service. 

Quiz Bowl

Coach:  Dawn Moser

Students compete with teams from other schools to answer questions from a variety of areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, math, current events, pop culture, sports, and more.

Softball

The Yutan-Mead Patriots is a co-op team to give our female students the opportunity to play softball at the high school level. 

Speech

Coach:  Alexis Pedersen

Speech team includes nine events where team members present and compete with published works of prose or self-written speeches. The events include Duet, Oral Interpretation of Drama, Serious Prose, Humorous Prose, Extemporaneous Speaking, Informative, Persuasive, Entertainment and Poetry.

Student Council

Sponsor:  Courtney Buelt

Student Council is an group who leads the organization and planning of Homecoming week, the Homecoming dance, as well as coronation of the Homecoming Royalty. Student Council also helps with welcoming parents at conferences and leading our pledge of allegiance daily.

Track & Field

Assistants:  Jason Larsen, Amanda Lee, Holly Miller and Lesha Quinn

Mead fields a boys and girls track team at both the High School and Jr. High levels.
 

Volleyball
