Quinn joins parents as teacher at Mead
Recently employed at Mead Public schools, a new English teacher is taking over the job of Alexis Pedersen, and previously – his father.
Josh Quinn, son of superintendent PJ Quinn, returns to Mead after graduating in 2018. For some, returning to the school where they were once a student would never cross their mind, however, Quinn always knew he would end up back near Mead.
“I always knew I wanted to get back this way,” Quinn said, “but I didn’t know if it was going to be Mead specifically. But I was not upset at all when I had the opportunity to apply for this job.”
Quinn teaches the higher-level English classes in the high school and is planning on being the head coach of the boys’ basketball team.
Quinn participated in multiple activities throughout high school. He engaged in basketball, football, track, FFA, FCCLA, student council and band.
“I was in band for three years, so… did it all.”
Although Quinn loves basketball and was even a star player in his high school time, he said teaching is more important than coaching.
“I think I can make a greater impact for all students, all people in Mead Public Schools, by being a teacher, and then the coach is secondary,” Quinn said.
In college, Quinn student taught in Harvard High School for one semester. He stated that he would rather have spent a whole year as a student teacher to prepare more for the actual teaching.
Quinn said he is happy to be back at Mead for the time being and is warming up to working among his former educators.
“It’s getting more normal, but it was weird at first when I came here in the summer and walked into the classroom to sit behind the desk,” Quinn said. “I thought they were going to come yell at me and give me a detention, but that’s not the case anymore.”
In both teaching and life, Quinn uses his humor to try and lighten the mood of every room he enters. He also uses his humor to his advantage in the classrooms.
“I try to use humor as a way to engage students, to let them feel hopefully a little more relaxed in the classroom.”
