  • District | Mead Public Schools

About Us Mead Public Schools District 72 HISTORY The Mead Public School was first organized in 1875 and began operation in 1876. In 1918, Mead became one of the first consolidated schools in Nebraska when it merged with three other school districts to form the present day District 72. Over the years, District 72 has had all or parts of fourteen districts become part of our school system. Originally, only ten grades were accommodated and the first tenth grade graduation was in 1890. The eleventh grade was added in 1898 and a twelfth grade in 1913. Prior to 1913, students wishing to complete grades beyond those offered in Mead traveled to Fremont or Wahoo. Education has traditionally been very important to the community. As a result expectations for Mead students has been held to a higher standard as evidenced by our test scores and graduates entering post-secondary education programs. Our school is a State of Nebraska Accredited public school system. Mead was a North Central Association (NCA) school from 1942 to 2023. From 1942 to 1993, Mead was a 7-12 NCA accredited school and from 1994 to 2023, Mead was NCA accredited K-12 making Mead one of the smallest schools and the only Saunders County school to have had a K-12 North Centrally Accredited system. In 2023, the district chose to drop NCA accreditation requirements to focus on the State of Nebraska system. In addition to a strong educational program, Mead offers opportunities to our students in many activities including athletics, music, drama, speech, FFA, and FCCLA. Mead has been a leader in many athletic and academic ventures in the school’s history. Most recently, we have been a leader in curriculum alignment and agricultural sciences. MISSION STATEMENT The Mead Public Schools, families, and community shall provide learning opportunities that challenge and encourage all learners. BELIEF STATEMENTS We believe: All students can learn Diversity will be recognized and respected In providing a physically and emotionally safe learning environment Education is a shared responsibility of students, staff, family, and community Proper communication is fundamental to effective education Respect for self and others is vital to education In providing a foundation for continued learning In using data to make educational decisions Honesty and academic integrity are essential to education.
