Veterans Day Ceremony Held at High School

by Ken Furstenau
November 11, 2009

In honor of our nation’s veterans Mead Public Schools hosted a Veterans Day ceremony on Monday November 11th. The ceremony, which was held at the high school, featured many fine performances by students from both the high school and the elementary school.

The ceremony opened with a brief speech by Mead’s superintendent of schools Dr. Dale Rawson. His speech featured a question and answer period with the Mead students on the history of Veteran’s Day.  Olivia Johnson then opened the student portion of the program with a speech entitled "The Meaning of Veterans Day."  Mead students Julia Couch, Taylor Hannen, Rachel Anderson, Emily Garcia, Stevie Kruger and Chelsea Musgrave then performed an A cappella version of the National Anthem. The National Anthem was followed by the first of two performances from our elementary students. Led by music director Mistyn Kozisek who accompanied the singers on the piano, students from the kindergarten through the second grade sang the song “Thank a Vet.” Later in the program elementary students from the third through the sixth grade performed the song “Free Like Me.” While the elementary students sang videos produced by Mead senior Krissy Johnson played in the background. In addition to the musical performances, a number of Mead students participated in the program. Mead sophomore Brandon Morin gave a speech on the history of the 21 gun salute. Brian Pearson, Katie Johnson, and Lindsey Pearson then led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. And finally, sophomore Lindsey Pearson talked about the contributions of people on the “home front” during times of war.

To close the ceremony juniors Craig Thilliander and Jake Virgl played a stirring rendition of “Taps” on their trumpets. During the closing address which was presented by Mead senior Brian Pearson, a moment was taken to honor the veterans in attendance. In attendance was Paul Kennedy a Naval veteran and grandfather of Mead students Krissy, Olivia, Victoria, and Sheldon Johnson as well as Josie Parham. Also in attendance was Marine veteran Jason Feltey who is the father of Mead students Jacob and Jaden Feltey. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those veterans that attended as well as all the member of the Mead community who took time out of their day to attend the ceremony.
