Mead Raiders Cross-Country team

It’s crunch time for the Mead Raider Cross-County team. With only the conference meet left before districts, it seems this season has flown by. The team consists of Teresa Tumbraegel, Heather Moerker, and Carol Miller. With only three members on the team, overall they are having lots of success. Teresa has been consistently finishing in the top half; Heather, who is forced to compete JV because of the NSAA transfer rule, has won two races; and Carol has won the gold in five out of six meets. As it is the first year for Mead to ever compete in cross-country, the team has had many learning experiences. Take Miller for example. During her second meet she took the wrong path, following the boys’ arrow instead of the girls’. The course was marked mainly with white arrows, except when the guys' and girls' paths crossed. In that case girls were to follow a yellow arrow instead. According to Miller, she came to an intersection that had two white arrows. “When I came to the arrows, I was confused, I kept thinking Where is my YELLOW arrow! I didn’t want to waste time so I picked one that looked promising.” About fifteen seconds later that arrow did not seem so promising to Miller anymore. “I heard the pack of girls run past and figured I should probably turn back around.” Miller headed back to the right path, now sitting sixth place and forty meters behind the leading pack. However, after a dead sprint to the finish against a Fort Calhoun runner, Miller was fortunate enough to earn the gold.
