Michael Klahn, Josiah Sohriakoff, Dylan Berner, Kassidy Holloway, Ethan Dyas and Hana Mayfield traveled to Ravenna, NE on Saturday, November 1st for an Academic Decathlon scrimmage.

Participating schools were Adams Central (Class B sized high school), Cozad (Class C), Lexington (Class B), Loup City (Class D), Mead (Class D), Ravenna (Class C) and York (Class B).

All 64 participating students took the same tests, covering the subjects of Language and Literature, Art, and Mathematics, however students are only scored against those within the same GPA range on those tests.

In Language and Literature, Josiah Sohriakoff placed 2nd and Michael Klahn placed 1st in the Varsity division.  Dylan Berner placed 1st in the Scholastic division, and his score tied for the highest in all divisions.  Hana Mayfield placed 3rd and Ethan Dyas placed 2nd in the Honors division.

In Mathematics, Hana Mayfield placed 2nd in the Honors division.

In Art, Josiah Sohriakoff placed 2nd in the Varsity division.  Ethan Dyas placed 3rd and Hana Mayfield placed 2nd in the Honors division.

All teams competed in the "Super Quiz".  During this, each team sent two representatives from each division to the stage to answer 10 questions on the subject of Social Sciences with an emphasis on Energy Policy.  Questions are read out loud and answers recorded on pencil and paper.  Scores are totaled after each question, allowing for the audience to cheer their team on as they compete.

Michael Klahn and Josiah Sohriakoff raced to 75 points of a possible 100 during the Varsity section of the "Super Quiz", taking an early lead over the 2nd place teams tied at 65.  Dylan Berner and Kassidy Holloway put up another 50 points, and increased the lead to 25 over the next nearest competitor.  Ethan Dyas and Hana Mayfield put up 45 points of their own, and closed out the "Super Quiz" giving Mead a 170 to 150 win over Adams Central and Loup City, who went on to a tie breaker.  All participants received gold medals for their "Super Quiz" win.

As a team, Mead finished in 3rd behind York and Loup City, despite Mead not having any Novice division participants to score points towards the team total.

Hana Mayfield was the high scorer for Mead.

Academic Decathlon will next be in action on January 17th in Regional Competition at a yet to be determined site.
