Husker Harvest Days
by Mike Schwab
On September 16th, the Mead FFA chapter hosted a trip to the
second day of Husker Harvest Days (HHD). The FFA chapter went to
HHD to learn about new trends in the agriculture industry. Along
with the Mead FFA chapter, members of the FFA Alumni and the
community rode along to HHD. Husker Harvest Days originally started
in 1978 on 1000 acres of old US Army Ordnance land.
In total there were eleven FFA members and five community members
went to Husker Harvest Days. Upon arrival, the students were
presented with a scavenger hunt to complete. The scavenger hunt was
won by Olivia Johnson, Chelsea Musgrave, and Jenna Schutt. Jenna
Schutt said that her favorite part of HHD was “winning the
scavenger hunt.” Lindsay Pearson commented on how fun UNL’s mobile
lab was. Her favorite part about it was “using the microscopes and
computers.”
HHD is a three-day farm show that displays new farming techniques,
new technologies in the agricultural industry, and new equipment
demonstrations. All of the major farm equipment manufacturers were
available for demonstration and for review at HHD. The most notable
ones are John Deere, Case-IH, New Holland, AGCO, Ford, Chevy/GMC
and Dodge. Trimble had their GPS setup so that they could
demonstrate how it worked. There were also tractors available for
people to test drive.
