Plant Science Students Learn from ARDC Farm Manager

by Kori Jensen

The Plant and Soil Science class visited the University of Nebraska’s Agricultural Research and Development Center this week to learn about technology in the Agronomy industry.  Students met Mr. Walker Luedtke, the farm manager.  He spoke to the students about career opportunities available in agriculture and the demand for qualified individuals needed in the agronomy industry.  Walker encouraged each of the students to get a degree in agriculture to be competitive in the job market.  The students really enjoyed learning about new technology within agronomy.  He explain how auto steer is allowing farmers to focus on other field information while harvesting and how Global Position Systems now play a huge role in chemical application.  The agronomy industry is always changing and will need more people interested in genetics and biotechnology to keep up with the growing population.  Plant Science student, Michael Schwab agreed with Walker as he explained that agriculture is an exciting field to be in because it is changing and advancing everyday.  The students enjoyed meeting with Mr. Luedtke and visiting the ARDC.
